Not sure what to say

One of my students had a baby this semester. Two weeks after a C-section, she was back in class, and two weeks later, all of her work was made up. She and her husband have been able to arrange his work schedule around her school schedule with a little help from a few sitters. I told her that if the sitter arrangement ever fell through, she could bring Junior to class, as long as she took him out if he cried.

I secretly hoped that her sitter would cancel so I could hold the baby.

That happened on Friday, and Junior attended Music History. (He was not, however, the first person to fall asleep during one of my classes.) During a break, I got to hold him. He's a snuggler. And he snuggled right into me.

I had such a hard time handing him back to his mama.

After class, one of my students said, "Dr. Degree, when are you and Mr. Unexpected gonna have a baby? You'd be such awesome parents."

It's not the first time I've heard that. But I never know how to answer, because I don't feel like telling my students (or other random folks who've asked) that we're trying and it hasn't happened yet. Because I don't want to hear just relax and it'll happen or well, at your age it might not happen or I know this great doctor/clinic/herbal remedy or that's what you get for waiting until almost-40 to try to have kids or have you tried fertility treatments yet?.

But every time someone asks, it makes my heart ache a little bit.
